Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt is a transformative education leader with 30 years of experience spanning the classroom, school leadership, and district administration. As Superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools, she led a diverse urban district serving more than 16,300 students from 118 countries who speak 127 languages, championing equity, innovation, and community as drivers of systemic change.
Under her leadership, ACPS achieved measurable gains in student achievement, expanded career and technical education pathways, and built an extensive portfolio of community partnerships. Dr. Kay-Wyatt’s impact has earned wide recognition: she is the recipient of the AASA–National PTA Family Engagement Changemaker Award, the Virginia PTA Power Partner of the Year, the VASS Region IV Superintendent of the Year, and was named a National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) Superintendent to Watch — a distinction honoring visionary leaders driving meaningful change in public education.
A respected national voice in education policy and leadership, Dr. Kay-Wyatt served as Past President and Board Chair of ASCD, the global professional association representing educators across 128 countries. She is a member of Chiefs for Change and Women Leading Ed, this and her other affiliations reflect her breadth and depth of engagement across the field. She served on the National Academy of Education (NAEd) Steering Committee (COVID-19 Project), and now serves on the William & Mary School of Education Policy, Planning & Leadership Advisory Board, the University of Mary Washington College of Education Board, the Google GSV Fellowship, and the CoSN/EmpowerEd Superintendent Advisory Panel.
A VCU Alumni honoree and former adjunct professor at William & Mary and Shenandoah University, Dr. Kay-Wyatt brings scholarly rigor and executive clarity to her roles as leader, keynote speaker, and advocate for every child’s right to an excellent and equitable education.
