Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt’s educational and professional background spans across a wide spectrum of experiences in the teaching and learning field and in a variety of roles and settings throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. As the superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools, she is dedicated to fostering innovative learning environments that prioritize student achievement, educator excellence and community engagement. Managing more than 16,300 students, Dr. Kay-Wyatt is a visionary leader dedicated to excellence in education, transforming schools through innovation, student-centered initiatives and strong community engagement. As superintendent she continues to drive measurable improvements in student achievement, expand career and technical education opportunities and champion inclusive policies that empower all learners to succeed in an evolving world. Her impact on staff development, community engagement and innovative programs led to her recognition and being named the 2025-26 Region IV Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents and the National School Public Relations Association as a 2023 Superintendent to Watch. Dr. Kay-Wyatt is a respected voice in educational policy and leadership development. She has served on numerous national and state boards, including the Board of Directors for ASCD, where she previously served as president and board chair. She has also been a legislative advocate at the state and national levels, shaping education policy to support lifelong learning and equitable access to a quality education. She currently serves as a member of the Kids’ First Board, University of Mary Washington College of Education Board and the Alfred Street Baptist Church Tutorial Board. Dr. Kay-Wyatt is an active member in the Virginia School Boards Association Task Force for Students and Schools in Challenging Environments, the National School Public Relations Association, City of Alexandria Domestic Relations Court Best Practices Committee, Washington Area School Study Council, National Academy of Education, and the University of Virginia K-12 Advisory Council. She is a past member of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce Visionary Committee, Virginia Department of Education State Superintendent Special Education Workgroup and the Germanna Community College Board of Directors. Dr. Kay-Wyatt is a Google GSV Fellowship mentor and an advisor to the Consortium for School Networking/EmpowerEd Superintendent Advisory Panel. She was also selected in 2024, as a Virginia Commonwealth University Ten Under Ten awardee. Kay-Wyatt also served as an adjunct professor at both the College of William & Mary and Shenandoah University, sharing her expertise in leadership, educational policy, and human capital management.
